Pilrig House is a great base for whisky enthusiasts, from newbies to connoisseurs. We will do everything we can to help you organise your unique whisky experience and to help you feel truly at home while you are in Edinburgh.

There are six distilleries within easy driving distance, including Glenkinchie, Famous Grouse, Dewar’s and Blair Athol.

Even closer to Pilrig House you will find the highly rated Scottish Whisky Experience, next to Edinburgh Castle. Here you can learn about the history of whisky through the ages, how whisky is made, and the skill of whisky blending. You can view the world's largest collection of Scotch whisky and learn about the Highland, Lowland, Islay and Speyside distilleries. Tours include features such as whisky tasting, tasting notes, your own whisky-tasting glass, and audio guides in a wide variety of languages.

Calling All Whisky Lovers

Over the years a great number of whisky lovers have enjoyed the hospitality of Pilrig House while gaining genuine insight into Scotland’s most famous export. We often welcome Canadian and American visitors, many of whom are keen to find a malt from the area of their forefathers. You might be coming from somewhere closer to Scotland – from England, Wales, Ireland or elsewhere in Europe. Perhaps you just love Scotch whisky and single malts and fancy adding an extra dimension to your trip to Edinburgh.

With the growing success of distilleries in Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden, we have been delighted to welcome Scandinavian whisky lovers to Pilrig House. Perhaps you are a whisky connoisseur or a member of a whisky club, an owner or partner of a whisky distillery. You might be looking to visit Scotland on a tasting tour, or to compare Scandinavian and Scottish styles of whisky. Or you may be interested in visiting some of Scotland’s micro-distilleries... and there are plenty to choose from.

You will be greeted with a decanter of whisky in your Pilrig House living room, after which you can enjoy:

  1. Exclusive membership of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society
    Your membership card will give you access to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s beautiful premises on Queen Street, central Edinburgh, and to The Vaults – one of Leith’s oldest buildings.
    As a member, you can discover the world’s widest selection of single cask, single malt whiskies, selected from the top distilleries in Scotland and casked especially for the society. You can sample some of Scotland’s top whiskies and you can attend any of the society’s tastings or extra-special events.
    Your membership will be for four adults – if you have friends staying elsewhere in Edinburgh, they can join you on any visits to the society.
  2. Your own Whisky File
    When you book at Pilrig House, we will send you a ‘Whisky File’. This includes links to all the local distilleries and whisky bars, and details of other notable distilleries and potential tours throughout Scotland.
