We just returned from a glorious trip up the west coast of Scotland, see below:
If you are coming to stay and have, or are hiring, a car, this is a stunningly beautiful drive - and, can be done in 2 days! Or, if planning ahead, continue the few miles up to Mallaig (prebook your ferry tickets!) and jump on a boat to some of Scotland's islands, eg Skye, Rum, Eigg, Barra, Mull, Canna....
Drive up to the beautiful 'Road to the Isles' to Arisaig and the white sands of Morar - if ever you watched Bill Forsyth's film 'Local Hero', this is where much of the filming took place. The film holds a special place in most Scottish people's hearts. I drove via Comrie, Crainlarich, Lochearnhead, Glen Coe - then took a little detour via the Corrin Ferry over to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula to stop off at Castle Tioram - a beautiful drive. On the way back, we took a 'loop' detour around the Argyll coast and stopped in Appin at The Pierhouse for a bar lunch - another fabulous drive and great place to dine before heading back to the big city.
A special treat was seeing the incredible Jacobite Stream Train in all her glory puffing along Glenfinnan - this rail route is considered one of the most beautiful in the world - get booking!
